Summary
Keith couldn't bear a universe that didn't have Shiro in it. What he got was a universe that had a Shiro that no longer loved him. And maybe if it had been anyone but Keith, that would have mattered.
Keith, however, had made a promise. "As many times as it takes," he'd said.
If he could make that promise reach beyond the bounds of death, a little thing like Shiro marrying someone else wasn't going to stand a chance.

Bookmarker's Notes
THIS is the true epilogue of Voltron:
Coran deserved family to pass his devotion to legacy and cultural memory unto: he deserved to NOT be the sole survivor of cultural genocide, stranded in a future that saw him as a walking joke, and, essentially, forgotten in an attic. Coran's pain - and his age, good gods, the LOSS he suffered even prior to canon (and again in losing Allura then the paladins) aged him to a point where ZARKON AND HAGGAR were his sole contemporaries - should never have been made light of: he deserved rest, descendants, and connection.
The... outrage, betrayal, and horror that was the handling of Shiro's queerness, his borderline contempt of Keith's devotion to him (THEY ARE T'HY'LA: IT IS TEXT AND EVEN THOSE WHO DO NOT SHIP SPOCK/KIRK OR KEITH/SHIRO UNDERSTAND THE DEPTHS OF A T'HY'LA BOND, ROMO OR NO ROMO), the abandonment of Lance to forced-mysticism & hermitude, and Allura's, essentially, assisted suicide? Anyone in the geeky queer, disabled, and POC communities would agree with my assessment that... this? What they DID to Voltron? After building trust, hope, and representations of us that were TRUE to us...
Dreamworks pulled a Person Of Interest on us:
Killing off, in circumstances that HAD ALREADY BEEN PROVEN SURVIVABLE, one of the few female leads but "no, she's happy, she's A God now" while leaving behind her POC lover with a hollow echo to carry with them as a constant physical tether to losing the love of their life.
Failing to hold to account SERIOUSLY EFFED UP organizations for the deeply disturbing actions they took pre-canon & throughout the show and, instead, uplifting them into even MORE power because "oh but they did the right thing IN THE VERY END".
Blatantly ignoring the repeated emphasis of "Team is FAMILY" and the NEED for a SHARED ending for their ENSEMBLE cast in favour of choosing ONE character as "main character", rewarding them endlessly (while shuffling others into caricatures of themselves to "remove competition"), distancing them from their Team, and then shoe-horning Designated Main into a Conventional Happy Ending - retirement from everything they had ever fought for, marriage to a character removed from their Team (despite VERY strong chemistry existing therein but at the "cost" of adding additional queerness to the MAIN characters), and presenting THAT as "happiness" for EVERYONE.
this? this fic KNOWS ITS PAIN: it exposes the shallow nature of what canon gave Voltron, holds our heroes accountable, shows the psychological cost of heroism-in-retirement, bleeds our heroes, has them reunite to heal TOGETHER, and addresses all that distance cost them.
this fic is Essential reading. it is validating, raw, and... stands on its own merits SPECTACULARLY. i am so, so grateful for its existence.
