“I told ya – people don't stay with me, and you still left me!”
He watches as a myriad of emotions flit over Robert's face – anger, devastation, hurt, and usually, at this point in their dance, Robert deflates, says you know why. But tonight, the dance changes pace, Robert crowds in impossibly closer, lips curled up in a snarl.
“And I told you: people don't forgive me, and you still haven't!” Robert hurls back, and Aaron takes a step back at the fury in Robert's voice like he got punched.
“Because ya left, Robert!” Aaron explodes. “You shut me out! You're the love of my life and you left me behind! You divorced me without –“ Aaron stops. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Robert was giving him a look, that look. It was as if Robert could tear Aaron open and peek inside him before patching him back up with just that one look. It left him feeling exposed and vulnerable and it was a scary, exhilarating feeling all in one.
“You said I'm the love of your life, as in present tense, like I'm still the love of your life.” Robert says with a grin, more of a smirk, really, with so much satisfaction and joy in his voice, Aaron is torn between kissing and punching him.

Aaron didn't need Robert back, didn't need the risk of losing him all over again, didn't need their messy, chaotic love when he had the settled, steady love from John, but he wanted it. He didn't need Robert's snark or their incessant squabbling or the constant up and down of their relationship, but he wanted it.
Like everything when concerning Robert, Aaron felt like he was being pulled in two different directions. Pulled between what was expected of him, what he should want, what he should do, and what he wanted.He shouldn't be disappointed, he should be thrilled. This is exactly what he asked for, what he demanded from Robert, and what he and John need to get back on track. Aaron will drive back and enter his nice, tidy home, with his nice, tidy husband who always says all the right things in all the right ways at all the right times, and it'll be good, it'll be exactly what Aaron needs.
His hands grip the wheel impossibly tighter. But not what he wants.
Or: Aaron is grumpy because for once in his life, Robert actually listened to someone and agreed to leave Aaron alone. A story told in two parts: the first after the prison visit, the second after Robert swans into Aaron's poky flat.

There’s more people Robert recognises, now. Some of them come up to him and say hello – Bob, David, Tracy. Others just stare and retire to their tables to whisper unsubtly. Sam and Belle Dingle practically recoil when they see him, and hurry over for what Robert can only imagine is an Emergency Dingle Summit with Chas. By the time the pub’s half full, everyone in it seems to be whispering or texting, some doing both at once.
Robert’s starting to feel like this was a bad idea.
Robert's back from prison, only to find that Aaron's married to his long-lost brother - and that he's mysteriously and chronically ill.It's possible those two things are related.

“Yeah…actually at one point we all thought it would be them together until the end of time… but life happened.” - shrugged Cain - “You know, no matter what I think about Robert, I can’t exactly blame him for doing what he did.”
“Why? What did he do?” - asked Caleb, sipping on his pint as they walked. Cain stopped walking, looked at him, and Caleb knew he was about to hear something awful. Just by the look on Cain’s face, he knew it was going to be something horrific.
