Mick was so hungry. His body had started screaming for nutrients hours ago, and was starting to shut down.
---A small mule deer skittered along the road and clicked its cloven feet on the cement as it stood up ahead of the van in the center of the path. It sniffed around and then noticed the hurtling vehicle, with an absentminded driver and passenger. But it did not run, it just watched, watched with curiosity as it was frozen in place. Up until the van smashed into it, and crumpled like it was a framework of wire and skin.
