“Am I just anybody?” Loid murmurs from behind, suddenly revealing himself to be much closer, though her never-ceasing awareness of his body-heat had betrayed that already. The retort’s still in line with whatever other teasing remarks they’d been exchanging, but the lighthearted atmosphere falls quickly. Something more heady and serious permeates the air now.
“I only meant, it's very boring.” Yor says, hand trembling in the air with her knife still gripped in its center, vice tight. “You wouldn’t find it… I mean..”
Unexpectedly, Loid takes her hand in his. He pries the knife from her grip with very little effort at all, mostly due to the strength of her grip failing when met with his own, and sets it down. When he speaks, his breath ghosts over the exposed arc of her neck. “There’s nothing I could find boring about you, Yor.”

She hadn’t said much all evening. Her usual brightness was dulled, not gone, but dimmed, like a light under a blanket. Loid had noticed. Of course he had.
“Work tiring you out?” he asked quietly, not looking up from the plate in his hands.

It wasn’t a lie exactly. But it wasn’t the truth, either.
Loid didn’t push. He told himself it wasn’t his place. And yet, he couldn’t ignore the way she hadn’t looked him in the eyes since dinner.
