Summary
Diamonds are the hardest and most brilliant of the gemstones
Rubies are red, rich and pure
Sapphires, famously blue, representing wisdom and loyalty. Second only to diamonds in strength.
Varadha couldn't be any of these. He never could handle the conditions. The pressure broke him and the heat boiled him alive, could only end up as glass at the end.
Precious stones were, as implied, precious, valuable and irreplaceable. They were strong and had their own hues and qualities.
In the end he took to acting the part instead. A stone could only be itself, but a glass piece could be cut up, reshaped and under different light yield different results.
He swore to become others needed to see, to help them and deceive, eventually.
Although he sometimes asked himself what he wanted, he decided a long time ago it doesn't matter, not when he was going to break at the finale.

The man speaks; his voice is rough and filled with grief. "This is my brother's child," and he gestures at the small infant, "I'm the only family she has left. I need her to live." Varadha looks at him and sees fire and death and things that were so familiar three years ago. Things that he has no right to miss, not here. But the man holds his eyes like not many can now and he feels a spark.
For better or worse, something stirs in him that has laid dormant ever since Deva walked out of his life for good.
