Summary
It has been a few years since Joe Connor was kidnapped and rescued from Rwanda, and then left on his mother's doorstep with little more than a goodbye. He is now a mostly recovered primary school teacher, about to help his kids hold a funraising Christmas Concert.
There are a lot of images that haunt Joe's mind from that time. Bloodshed, terror, pain. But the one memory that doesnt haunt him are those of the man behind it all, the very same man who, in a way, held him captive. Joe misses him dearly. He knows it isn't Stockholm Syndrome, but as the man said when he left him, they would never see each other again.
And when the kids decide they want to raise the money for a Rwandan relief fund, all the memories, good and bad, begin to bombard Joe. Still, he agrees it is a brilliant idea, for the children.

Jean made a small grimace, which to others would not be noticeable, but to Joe it was quite obvious. He was nervous, which was not normal for the so calm Jean, who always wore a neutral face, which helps him in his fierce games of poker. Joe, to calm the Albanian, smiled at him with the kindness that characterized him, urging him to continue.
After carefully placing his glass on the table, Jean let out a small sigh "I need you to be my companion for the next poker game that I have to attend in a couple of days, for that ... I need you to act as my partner." With that, silence spread between the two.
