"I promise," Lance swiftly said. Then, he quickly added, "You don't have to tell me because you feel bad, tough. It's okay to—"
"I think I'm in love with Ethan," Silver blurted out, cutting through Lance's speech like the piercing blow of a Dragon Claw, and all the possible scenarios he had wracked in his mind that ranged from his teenage kid being caught in a fight with fellow trainers on Pasio to him discovering a new problem with himself were torn into pieces.
Or: Silver has yet to return to their hotel room after the search of the shiny Suicune was done, and when he finally did, he trusted Lance enough to bare the trouble that has followed him tonight to his mentor— his realization that he loves Ethan.

But Lance, the first person who saw past all of his childish mistakes and only saw a kid beneath them, had walked into his gym and noticed the spiral that he hid from everyone else in a single glance, and the simple truth of it was the final blow needed to break Silver's wavering resolve, forcing him to croak out, "No matter how different this city and gym looked now, I still see my parents in every corner and crevice, and the past just… continues to haunt me. I thought they would go away with time, but they only drove me crazy instead."
Or: instead of enjoying the Tanabata Festival with the rest of the Viridian City like a good Gym Leader, Silver instead shut himself off and found an unexpected company with Lance. Truths he tried so hard to hide bled so easily when he was facing someone that actually knew him in his hometown.

Summary
If asked, Lance wouldn't be sure if he could tell exactly who was the one answering Silver's question. But, regardless of who was standing in the present, he knew that they both cherished the same, pure-hearted child no matter how different he may look in their respective memories, so the next words that broke the silence were nothing but the simple truth, parental love willed into existence as easy as breathing. "I wouldn't miss it for the world, Silver."
Or: after pushing himself too far while training for the Arceus Cup, Lance found himself learning an important lesson taught by the past, present, and future versions of his son, Silver.
