Summary
When Helm's Deep falls to the forces of Isengard before Gandalf can return, Legolas thinks he knows what to expect of the orcs' victorious tortures; he is an Elf of Mirkwood, after all. But neither he, nor Saruman's forces, were prepared for his reaction when they turn their whips on Gimli in his stead.
