Whipping his head around, his heart thumps in his chest. His mom stands in the doorway, wearing a floral top and a floor-length black skirt. Her hair is shorter than he remembers, but it suits her well. They say nothing for a few moments, sitting in absolute silence before Rei enters his room and shuts the door behind her.
She looks better than he remembers. Rei is no longer a sick, meek woman who always hid when Enji raised his voice. She looks better and stronger than Touya has ever seen. He thought he would be angry when they were reunited, but no sparks of anger flickered in his stomach. He just looks at her, his mouth closed, as she approaches him. He sits beside her in silence, her hands in her lap, staring at the portrait on the shrine.
Touya and Rei talk after the war.

Touya remembers seeing the flash of blue through the display window one time during a previous run he did with Compress. He remembers the way he stopped cold in his tracks, the way Compress had to snap his fingers in front of his face to get him to focus. He hasn't seen them in years, not since the last time he had been inside his old home when he was sixteen and didn't belong there anymore.
Touya saw them as he was leaving through the back door, the same door his mom would take him through to take walks in the garden. He passed by the same pond, where the same flower patch sat. After all the years of it being there, the flowers still bloomed the same. He remembers that very clearly.
