He waited for a voice they would never hear again. He waited for the drawl from the newly named jonin in charge of the mission.
He stood still, frozen to the spot, lost in memories of a time before his life went to hell, before Iwagakure and Kirigakure tore his world apart. Beside him, Kakashi chose to watch him, drinking in his shifting emotions and the hard frown that he swore would be a permanent part of their mission.

He felt like he could shatter this moment with one breath. But the longer nothing happened, the more the touch burned itself into his skin. Marking him. Making him yearn…for something he could not quite grasp.
