Hermann is on the outs with his Magic: The Gathering group for using too much math. Newt had no idea that Hermann even had a Magic: The Gathering group, and frankly, he’s fascinated by the whole idea. Hermann has hobbies?!
Newt has to get in on this. Sure, he’s never played before, but what could go wrong? He can learn. Hermann can teach him. He’ll be great at it, and, bonus, they can spend some quality time together.
And, hey, there’s a first time for everything.

“Can I- can I ride your thigh?” Newt finally gets out, panting, gesturing to the thigh of Hermann’s good leg.
“You want to grind on my leg?” Hermann asks him, and hearing Hermann say something so very crass knocks a sound out of Newt that has him covering his mouth.
“None of that,” Hermann is scolding him now, taking hold of his arm, “Let me hear you, or I’ll stop. Understand?”
Newt nods so enthusiastically his glasses slide down his nose.
Or; Even the heads of research need a little stress relief sometimes. And sometimes that involves learning a little something new about your partner.

Summary
It was cold in the Place; cold and bright. The lights were harsh, so much so that if Newt looked near one, it almost burned. Not that he could see much anyway; his glasses were gone, his vision painfully blurry, like he was ten years old and glasses-less again. The bridge of his nose was uncomfortably chilled, absent of the familiar weight of his classic Geiszlerian nerd-chic specs. It was mildly awful; he had a headache, and even worse, he was stuck in some kind of chair, arms and legs firmly cuffed to it. He couldn’t move his wrists, and they hurt; at one point he must have rubbed them raw on accident. His left arm was stretched over a much higher elongated arm of the chair, and an IV was stuck into his elbow. Little raised cigarette-burn-like marks were dotted around the vein, as if the IV had been violently yanked out multiple times.

Newt holds out his hand, but Karla hugs him. This is not how he'd expect to be greeted by a Gottlieb.

[Hermann] would be lying if he said he hadn't been thinking about fucking Newton again. Doing it properly, even. Comfortable in one of their beds.
But every night, Newton would walk Hermann back to his room, give him a goodnight kiss, and head back to his own quarters.
Hermann couldn't help but be confused. He had no doubt that Newton had been sincere when he proclaimed his excitement regarding their relationship, despite Hermann's preferences, so perhaps Newton hadn't been in the mood himself.

“Hermann,” he exhales softly, as the other man settles down on the shower chair beside him. When Hermann had offered his quarters as a place to wash up before a long, well deserved rest, it seemed foolish to say no. But he’s not entirely sure how they’ve both ended up completely stripped down in the shower which, while large, is frankly on the small side for two men who do not know each other intimately. Well, do not know each other’s bodies intimately. They’ve been in each other’s heads now, after all.

The promise feels simultaneously like some sacred quest and something too hollow. Hermann doesn’t even have a concept of what home could mean to Newt in the current context. He’s certainly not sure if it’s going to be overwhelmingly difficult to achieve. Part of him just wants to get to the hurdle of getting Newt back, they can work on the rest together. They can struggle when it’s the two of them together. They always made more sense as a pair than on their own.

Hermann isn't thinking when he offers to Drift with Newton; or, rather, he is; but not of the ramifications. In that second, he's just thinking about the fact that Newton will die if he does another Drift on his own, and then they really will be doomed. The specifics of it get a bit blurred with a few exceptions—namely, that Newton, too, is trans; and apparently also quite attracted to him, which Hermann is quite happy to learn.
That's how, three months later, Hermann finds himself waking up from a midday nap with a rather confusing memory at the front of his mind; specifically, that of their first meeting, from Newton's perspective; and, further, the hour or two following it, which have Hermann blushing despite the fact that they have had sex.
