Burr dragged his eyes from the coast of Manhattan, the far side of the river which he now found himself standing beside, and stared across the dueling ground, sizing up his opponent.
Hamilton.
It always came back to Hamilton.
Hamilton who had been haunting him for months like a particularly irritating ghoul, inserting his unfounded opinions into the ears of any who would listen.
Hamilton who couldn’t stand the thought of anyone disagreeing with him. Hamilton who would scheme and manipulate and strike at the core of one’s honor in the name of political discourse.
It was Hamilton’s pistol in his hand now. Burr let himself feel the weight of it in his grip, solid and heavy where he ran his thumb along the smooth handle.

Cooper rises from his chair so swiftly that Alexander doesn’t have a chance to question it, or perhaps–if he were more attuned to danger signals–a chance to run.
“Well then, my dear determined boy,” he says, voice so low and soft it might be considered a whisper as he comes to stand behind Alexander’s chair, ghost of a breath at his ear when Cooper leans low to speak into it, one hand brushing aside his queue to trace up the column of his neck, “go ahead. Prove yourself.”
