And whilst he even spoke a number of languages native to the regions of Celes and its neighbours for the life of him Kurogane’s mother tongue eluded him.

"Kurogane would hear it sometimes, deep in the night, usually much later than this. He couldn’t say Fai was singing, per se — there were no words in the tunes. He had the impression that whatever was behind them, it was too personal to voice, too powerful to hum, and too raw to sully with the terrible impression of a whistle he tended to use. Instead, Fai just vocalized in long and lilting vowels, melodies drifting into every open space until Kurogane almost convinced himself that Fai’s voice had become an apparition itself and haunted the very ears that heard it."
10 pages of me waxing poetic about fighting together, spinning magic theory and calling it a fic, and coming under the spell of rich smoke and a lonely song.

Nihongo is a strange tongue, evenly sprinkled with consonants and vowels, crisp and sharp but not unkind – much like Kurogane himself. Compared to the gentle roll and glide of Celesian, the difference makes Fai think that these are two languages not meant to meet.
Fai wants to learn Nihongo. He wants a lot more, actually, but doesn’t have the words to say it.

Alone together in Yama and battling every night on the moon, it was probably only a matter of time before chance overrode skill and one of them ended up badly hurt. It's worse luck that normally, Kurogane would end up crippled for it. But Yasha's army's mysterious doctor offers Fai a bargain: his body for Kurogane's.

The words are soft, barely audible, even in the quiet room; but Kurogane still feels his teeth grind together.
“Don’t call me that.”

Basically, the one where Kurogane is angry and lonely and so far from home, and Fai pretty much just hates himself; and they agree on something casual, since they both really need the distraction, and since they’re going to be traveling together, anyway.
In other words, the one where they’re not supposed to fall in love, and then they really, really do.
(A/N: This is essentially me trying to write a world-by-world story [spanning all the way from Hanshin to Piffle] on how these two darlings could get together.)

A/N: I just finished reading TRC and TWC, and I ship these two darlings so hard it causes me emotional distress.

It’s the middle of the day. They don’t do this in the daylight.
It doesn’t seem to matter, though. And when Fai closes his eyes and starts to drift off, resting against his chest like he never wants to move again, Kurogane just presses in closer and holds on tight.
They’re not safe. As long as they’re trapped here, they’ll never be safe.
But, maybe, even for just for a few minutes, Kurogane can enjoy the illusion that they are.
