Summary
Varian has been a part of the circus since before he could walk, taking after his mother who was the circus's poster child for years. Hugo is their newest addition, and Donella has left Varian up to the task of making sure everything goes smoothly.
It goes about as well as you would think.

“Something like that.” Hugo pauses for a second, contemplating. Then, “Did you grow up on a farm?”
An incredulous laugh bursts out before Varian can stop it. Because yeah, he did. “You’re supposed to be asking questions about your job.”
“I already know how to do my job.”
“We’ll see.”
“You don’t believe me, Blue?”
“I don’t care,” Varian says. “And my name is Varian.”
“What do your friends call you?”
“I doubt you’ll find out.”
