Summary
The beautiful man drops his hands from Joe’s face instantly, and his skin feels colder without his touch.
“I’m Nicky,” Nicky says woodenly. “I’m...I’m your familiar.”
“I have a familiar?”
(The last thing Joe remembers is getting drunk with his best friend Booker in a bar after a fight with his terrible boyfriend, Keane. But he wakes up in a hospital, with a gorgeous man at his bedside, telling him impossible things. Things like how he's Joe's familiar. Things like how they're married.)

Summary
The thing about this story is that when it starts they are both already dead. The story ended before it began but we tell it anyway because the ghosts linger long after they’ve disappeared. The story starts with a girl who has everything and a boy who knows everything - the dreamer and the fighter. The story starts with the promise of a life they know they could never have had but they fought for anyway. And you’ve heard this one before, haven’t you? You know how it ends. But you listen anyway, because what if? (The only thing we as humans are good at, I think, is dreaming. Or maybe our greatest talent is self-delusion.) And so the story begins, and you relax in your chair because you always seem to think that believing is seeing, so this one, this one will surely end well.
(I don’t enjoy spoilers, but this whole story is one, so let me tell you the truth: it won’t.)
The story begins with a dream.
or,
The nature of dreaming.
or,
Humanity's relationship with hopelessness, unhappiness, and each other.
