"I find myself...ill at ease," she admitted.
"If you are unhappy with your current position, we can always trade," Spock said, a sly glint to his eyes.
Michael shot him an unimpressed look. "We haven't even left spacedock and already you're angling for my job?"
"Intriguing interpretation of support," he mused, the very soul of innocence.

"Michael. You're early."
Too busy staring at the steel gray sweater that seemed to show off every single muscle in his arms and chest, it took Michael a moment to follow that. What?
"Number One told me the party would be starting earlier to accommodate alpha shift's early start," she said, slow.
"Did she," Chris said, even, something like suspicion flashing in his eyes.

"Don't freak out, but Lieutenant Lavalle was asking about you," Tilly said in a single breath, setting her dinner tray on the small table Michael had claimed in the mess hall and taking a seat.
Michael frowned. "Why would I freak out?" she asked, taking a bite of her veggie goulash, pondering what Lavalle needed. The repairs had all been completed and there were no outstanding engineering tasks that needed her input, so far as she knew.
Tilly actually rolled her eyes. "Some days you are so Vulcan." She leaned forward, lowering her voice. "He was asking if you're seeing anyone."

"Captain, I must protest. Tales of my childhood are not relevant to our mission."
Before Chris could respond, Michael cut in: "Don't worry, Spock." She shot Chris a challenging little look. "They'll have to earn their stories."
"I do believe I'll rise to that occasion," Chris offered, so relieved at the gentle banter it almost went to his head.
Michael raised a cutting and oh-so-Vulcan eyebrow. "We'll see."

Michael swallowed as Chris emerged from the bathroom, clad in nothing but a white towel, his skin still a little shiny from the shower, hair damp but combed into place. He absently headed for the closet, nothing special about it, just a man in the midst of his morning routine.
And she was riveted.

Michael's discomfort morphed into outright irritation. Enough of this. "There is no score. The captain and I are not banging or knocking boots or having fun or whatever other sexual euphemism you use to avoid the adult words."
Ortegas and Chapel both stared at her, seeming baffled. "Well...didja ever think you should be?" Ortegas asked, faint. "You two literally heat up the bridge and I'd really like to stop sweating at work."

Chris narrowed his eyes. "You're being crass to throw me off my game so I'll reveal something."
"It's cute that you think you haven't," Una said, fond. "Because if you're not planning to sleep with your occasional sex partner, that would prompt questions about why. Which would lead to questions like—shot in the dark here—could it possibly be the massive torch you're carrying for your new Chief Science Officer?"
"You know, I liked it better when you spent your time fantasizing about my love life instead of talking about it."

"I will admit, sir, when you offered to show me the ship, I didn't expect to be led into its bowels."
Well, wasn't that just setting him up to spike it? He looked at her primly. "Not going after that low-hanging fruit. I do have standards."
"Do you, though?" she shot back, dry. Teasing. He loved it when Michael went teasing on him.

"The hull's still doing a remarkable impression of Swiss cheese, but repairs are proceeding on schedule, so at least there's that," Una said, dry, as she scrolled through her PADD. "Which leaves only one high-priority item on the list: the CSO assignment." She looked up at Chris, blue eyes far too innocent.
He made sure not to react. When Una was fishing, the trick was to give her nothing. "Hardly high priority when we won't be able to ship out for months," he drawled.
"All the more reason to get someone in place now, so they can optimize the departments to their liking." She tilted her head, the lights of the ready room glinting off her dark hair, her expression going gentle. "You can tell me if you've lost confidence in Spock."

The shouts from security sounded louder, their pursuers getting closer.
Pike checked the street, concerned, then looked to Michael. "Gonna clue me in to the plan here or what?"
Which was when she pushed him into the wall and kissed him.

Tilly looked at her like she should know this. "Lavalle told a friend who told a friend who told everyone, so now they all think you don't experience physical attraction," she said, like that was somehow normal and not Michael's literal nightmare.
Behind her, a voice called out, "Yo, Burnham, do you really not lust? 'Cause, like, I'm gonna need deets on that." Michael blinked in horror as Wells and Larani appeared, casually taking seats like Michael didn't generally avoid them and their complete lack of boundaries.
And Wells was still talking: "Also, hear me out, have you ever tried girls? Because maybe this isn't a 'don't want to jump Lavalle thing' and is instead more of your tragic Vulcan upbringing. I mean, I don't know how Vulcans explore their sexuality, but I've talked to Spock for five minutes, the answer seems to be not well."

Tilly gestured to the picture, like it was obvious. "Look at how he's looking at you."
Michael took it in again, but no, the image hadn't changed. It was still Chris being Chris. "That's how he looks," she said slowly, lost.
Tilly blinked. Opened her mouth. Closed it. Then took a breath. "Are you telling me he looks at you like that all the time?"

Michael took pity and elaborated: "Captain Batel handled my case."
Chris blinked as that piece of news landed. He looked to Marie in amazement. "Did she," he said, not a question.
Marie remained entirely unfazed. "Someone had to do the paperwork."

Tilly raised a wicked eyebrow at her. "Babe, you told the representatives of Starfleet's white whale that Pike was the hottest guy you'd ever seen and you did it in front of the man himself and witnesses. There will be no moving on. In fact, don't be surprised if this ends up in your file. You know, first mutineer, Medal of Valor winner, told Captain Pike he was hotter than a supernova. Legends-only shit right there. I'm beyond proud."
"I hate everything about this day," Michael said, flat, keenly aware of the mess hall doors opening, the group of yeomen exiting, shooting her knowing looks as they went.

Michael couldn't help the incensed noise she made. "That's why you're so unbothered? You think you're destined for a training mission accident, so you can't die here?"
Chris shot her an amused look. "You know, your condescension could give Stamets a run for his money."
"I reject your so-called fate," she continued, ignoring him.
"Oh, I'm aware," he drawled, still amused.

A young man's voice rang out from the crowd: "Got any advice on how to handle dating on the command track?"
Michael's eyes widened at the brazenness just as April muttered, "every damn time," under his breath.

"Captain," Una said in that drawn-out way that meant you're screwing up, Chris, "Burnham's experience makes her the most qualified to complete this mission." Emphasis on complete.
Chris stilled. Una rarely challenged him so directly in front of others. She would only do so if he were beyond the pale. Which meant he was. Because it was Michael.
Dammit.

Wells half-nodded, half-shrugged. "Love Rishi, but La'an has him on gamma all week. Finding a time for him to bang Burnham would be a nightmare."
Michael just stared, horrified on so many levels. "Please tell me you don't have encyclopedic knowledge of everyone's bedroom skills, relationship status, and current schedule."
Wells looked at her blankly. "Duh."
Larani just smirked. "Why, what do you do with your time?" she drawled.
