Estinien was uninterested, however, as he found the bed he shared to be like a hearthfire in a cold Coerthan winter, thawing his frozen marrow and welcoming him home. Relaxing in the crook of his shoulder was a soft tangle of meadow green, and two long ears which twitched as his breath passed over them. Below, N’anova was sleeping peacefully, her two eyes, emerald and diamond, still hidden from the new day.
Estinien lay his head back softly on his pillow, an exhale of defeat across his lips. He could feel the steady rise and fall of her back against his hand, the tickle of her hair on his shoulder and the odd sensation of her tail over his leg. It was comfortable. Easy.
It was everything he had prayed it wouldn’t be.
