Summary
In the land of the Enchanted Forest, even the humans have some form of magic. Theirs takes the form of their daemons, a physical manifestation of their soul. Most humans fear magical creatures for their lack of a visible soul, and most magical creatures regard humans with contempt for their daemons, regarding them as a clear liability.
The Dark One falls into neither category, and both.(Or, in which the author uses a daemon au to grapple with the implications of souls and dark magic, and the Curse of the Dark One is objectively worse. This leads to some changes down the line.)
