Summary
Chuuya Nakahara was dead. He was dead, and he was never coming back. That was obvious, but when you are mourning, you go through a little thing called denial. Just like when you fall in love. You deny that they are gone, in hopes that maybe you will be right if you just don’t face it.
Osamu Dazai was not an idiot. He knew death like a close friend– he’d witnessed it, caused it, and he’d attempted to bring it to himself many times. He knew how it worked like the back of his hand.
But, as always his partner was different from the rest and managed to change many things about him. Brought new thoughts to him, made him feel things nobody had made him feel before. One of those new thoughts was, why wasn’t Chuuya home yet?
Realistically, Dazai knew. He knew that his husband was dead, that he wouldn’t walk through that door and announce loudly how he was home, and pretend to be annoyed with how Dazai didn’t eat the lunch he’d made for him, when really he was just concerned.
But, as was said earlier, when your loved ones die you grieve, and part of grief is denial.

Several weeks have passed since the fallout of the airport massacre, Dazai has donned the mafia-black once again as the returned 'Demon Prodigy'. Those who remain with the ADA are desperate to return to some semblance of normalcy.
Ranpo starts taking cases by the dozen, more as a protective measure over anything else. Until the Metropolitan Police start pulling politics, sidelining him with cold cases and even colder silences.
Weeks later he is wakes with a phone-call, pressing the urgency of having his eyes on some more fresh material.
Picking up this homicide case was supposed to be his chance to show up Minoura for falling in-line with poor enforcement policy. Instead, he's caught in a constrictive moral snare:
If his glasses are the key to bringing the truth to light, why can't he bring himself to look at his closest friend and clear him as the primary suspect?

Life is unfair. Dazai would know that better than anyone. He was taught that fact the moment he could understand what words meant. The world is cruel and doesn't care what it takes from you.
He ran away from the Port Mafia in a panic, hoping that maybe he'd be allowed the happiness that had been robbed from him at such a young age. He has a new purpose now, a reason to keep moving forward. He joined the light to better himself and leave behind his past for his little Angel. An angel he would rather die for than see get hurt.
But as people like to say, it's only a matter of time before your past catches up to you. You can never truly run from your past. Everything he spent four years building starts crashing down around him quicker than he thought it would. Now he had to face his demons head-on, protect the one thing he truly cared about, keep the Armed Detective Agency out of his messy life as much as he could, and tell Chuuya to shove it where the sun didn't shine more times than he would like.
Dazai Osamu, Demon Prodigy and former Port Mafia Executive, will do anything to keep his bloody past from touching the one light in his life. He can't run away anymore, and funnily enough, that scares him.

Atsushi has always hated fighting alone; he hated being alone. He didn’t like it when he was by himself, it always made him scared. He didn’t want to fight alone for fear he may fail. Atsushi doesn’t like solitude. He hated the memories that would invade his mind, the feelings of a nail going through his foot, laying on the cold, dark ground, or the harsh punishments he would endure while eating food just to survive . He hated the kids at the orphanage who cut his hair, stole his stuff, made fun of his appearance, and poured milk on his head through the small window in his cage. He hated Akutagawa. Every time that man was brought up, Atsushi couldn’t help but shake with anger.
Atsushi found he hated many things. Many things angered him, made him want to pull his hair out, and caused him to be upset and uneasy.

An entire room of people who are more family than plain old friends and not one of them can notice the difference in the air, the unrest; Atsushi's upset.
Kunikida helps Dazai to settle and whispers to her what to do: simple step-by-step instructions that she can actually achieve without getting too bored. Kenji and Kyouka are playing footsies under the table, trying their hardest to keep their giggling quiet. Ranpo is lounging on the office couch, and his body is so relaxed it's envious.
All these people are so happy together.
