Summary
One time, when a shadow falls over the box, it doesn’t pass immediately. She tilts her head up and howls again, but no sound can come out of her scratched throat. There a kind of perfect, comforting warmth as something reaches in. She nuzzles against it, but it reaches past her. She feels one of the things who look like her being lifted up, into the cold abyss she knows is dangerous. For the first time in her life, she musters a bark. A real one. But she’s drowned out by the whimpering of the others.
