Every time he made the trip to Delacroix from New York, he brought Sam a half-dozen red and yellow tulips. And when they wilted during one of his visits, he replaced them with something else. Sometimes red chrysanthemums. Daffodils. The bushy fern that hung from a basket on the front porch. A spray of honeysuckle that proliferated on one of the old outbuildings. Calla lilies. Even a couple potted violets that took up residence on the windowsill of Sam's bedroom. Sam had just assumed it was just Bucky’s way; a carryover from his former life, a slightly old-fashioned romantic gesture.
