Papers found in the Fitzwilliam Archive at the University of Birmingham, catalogued under an AHRC grant between 2002 and 2007, suggest an unusual outcome to a duel between two gentlemen only loosely connected to the Fitzwilliam family: instead of marking a rupture, the duel appears to have led to tighter relationships between a network of individuals affected by the wounding of one of the principals.
