Summary
His sweaty forehead was still pressed into the door, the grooves digging into his skin and leaving red lines there. He fiddled with the hem of his shirt, deliberating; if he were to open the door, he would cross over that invisible barrier to be a good brother who would warmly hug her now but go to the aviation academy one day and disappear from her sight. If he were to keep it closed so that they were forever on two sides of the door in this childhood home, he could continue to hear her sweet voice begging for his comfort, unable to leave this small, dusty attic. He did not know how he could go on, knowing this was the addicting feeling of trapping his very own songbird.
