He had counted every second, every minute, every passing day. Every morning without an order from his doctor. Many sleepless nights spent staring at the ceiling, wondering if he’d ever hear that voice again. That sharp, commanding tone that made the world make sense.
The world moved on, but Stone never did.

Summary
It was a remote place—don’t worry yourself on specifics, they’re classified—somewhere near to an icecap and somewhere very not near to human settlement. Dr. Robotnik was among the first crowd from the United States to decide this place was important to visit. He was, also, among the first to decide it was important to science.
He was also there to escape his immediate superior’s motherhenning—another thing not to worry yourself on, as it’s none of your business and thus classified information.
Overall, the Vortex (or so the mouth-breathers he traveled here with called it) was a strange and deathly quiet place. Extreme winds and extreme cold, but not a soul for a very, very long while. It made Robotnik feel homesick, despite that his laboratory was equally barren. But at least it was warm there, and had the coffee he almost liked (if he pretended reeeally hard), and was familiar and recognizable and not…not this.
And then, he heard gunfire that was less warning shots and more actively killing people.
(In which Dr. Robotnik is a lost and injured scientist, and Agent Stone is a shapeshifter who helps him out.)
