Summary
The first thing that hits his eyes is a strand of white-cyan-violet and he flinches on instinct and scrambles for the controls and— realizes it doesn’t move, not like the lasers had; a curling mirage of scattered smoke. Not a straight line. A circle; a messy one. A vast line of glowing dust and specks of plasma glinting like little stars in a cloud that, like smoke on water, glides and weaves within the cosmos until it falls in line.
He already knows what awaits him once he sees the signs. Puts it together. The reeling sea of stars sliding too freely, like oil, on the watery matter of spacetime; the explosion converted into rings of cyan-violet flame brighter on one side and so neat in the face of the natural chaos of things.
A black egg resting so calmly, so nicely, in the middle.Lord, I worry,

Summary
Millie shakes her head. Vash takes the moment to really size her up; her eyes are a bit reddened and her lips are pressed together. Despite that, she looks more determined than anything, her hands wound together in front of her chest.
“I thought about it while I was checking over her,” Millie says. “You wrapped her bandages so carefully. And I know that you’re the type who will feel upset but try to be brave for everybody else—but this isn’t something like your brother or the accident. You don’t have to pretend in this case.” She shifts her weight and exhales, and Vash finds it fortunate that she isn’t looking at his face while she does, because he’s not quite able to suppress his wince. “So… please, Mr. Vash. Go watch over her. It would really make both of you feel better, and… me, too.”
It… feels like a violation. Not in any kind of nefarious way. But Vash can still vividly remember the way Meryl had flinched away from him at the Dragon’s Nest—and yes, it had hurt, but not on a personal level. It wasn’t like being called stupid or smacked in the face, insulted in some deeply offensive and harmful way.

Vash cleans up after Meryl is injured.
