    He had never seen such a creature. Skin like the ice floes that from time to time drifted from the north, so pale that her veins ran like blue rivers just beneath (she must be so cold). Her body was plush – round and plump and spilling, with rolls at her waist and the joins of her thighs that his hands itched to hold. She knelt over her oysters and her breasts hung heavy, bright nipples like little jewels that he wished to hold in his mouth; his tongue pressed to the ribbed roof of mouth as he gazed upon her. And her face, drawn in concentration as she cracked the shells then melting into delight as she sucked back sea-salted flesh; round cheeks and bright eyes and the wet lick of her mouth, reddened from her meal.
    “Madame,” he called out, his lips and throat making the word before his brain had quite given them permission to. “Are you in need of assistance?”
    Recognition, and then; outrage.
    “You!” Her voice was exceedingly high and pleasant, almost girlish, and utterly at odds with the shell she spat out vehemently as she spoke and the fury upon her face. “You are the thief!”

She also had never expected him to cut his tour short and show up on her doorstep in the middle of the winter, insisting that she accompany him to Aubrey Hall at his mother's behest so that she and Eloise could repair their friendship before the new season began. She certainly had not expected an abundance of accidents and bad luck to leave them trapped alone at an inn for the foreseeable future.

    But Penelope was resolute in her decision to break free of their so-called friendship. She could make due with her lingering anger at Colin's harsh words the season before and take solace in the fact that Colin, as a beta, wouldn't be ruled by his instincts at the prospect of being trapped with an omega like an alpha would.
