Summary
The Empire is winning the war. In the wake of his master's death, Volstrucker Bren ascended to Archmage of Civil Influence, but he's been secretly undermining the Empire by feeding intelligence to the Mighty Nein, a group of adventurers fighting for peace. When his rival and friend the Shadowhand is captured, Bren acts on the only idea that will spare a Kryn politician from execution: claiming him as a war prize.
Bren and Essek are forced to perform a fake politican/concubine relationship, including all the tension and jingoism it entails, while taking advantage of their circumstances to spy on and steal from the court around them. Bren may wield the leash, but Essek has cards up his sleeve, and even so, Bren fears hurting Essek almost as much as Essek fears losing Bren. Their mutual trepidation must graduate to mutual trust — maybe even love — if they have any hope of surviving the lie they started.

Summary
“You could have me here,” suggests Essek gently. For once, he does not sound in control. Not of himself, not of anything.
Caleb lets out a breath, pushing in on the plug instead of tugging out. Essek’s hips stutter forward in acceptance of it. The quietest moan sounds out of him: a tiny, satisfied thing, like tasting a chocolate truffle. Mmh.
But they can’t. They have affairs set in order that they both cared very much for last night. He couldn’t stand the disappointment in the morning when they realize what they have overlooked.
“No,” says Caleb. “We have a reservation.”
— Essek and Caleb go to Nicodranas and have the vacation of a lifetime. (And Bren is also there, and problems are had and resolved.)

Summary
After Lucien, after Ikithon, after everything, Essek is on the run, and that means he and Caleb spend far more time apart than either of them would prefer. But Essek has a spell that will collapse the distance between them—at least in dreams.
And oh, does he ever have plans for his beloved when they see each other again.
(Or: Essek uses the dream spell to visit Caleb while they’re apart, and takes him on a wildly imaginative sexcapade.)

Summary
Essek is lucky to be alive.
It can be hard to believe, with the scars he now bears. The Mighty Nein turned on him at the close of the war, and he barely escaped with his life. He defied fate to be here.
At least, that is what Ludinus Da'leth told him, when he offered Essek shelter in exchange for his particular expertise. Essek's own recollection is—
Fraught.
