Dream sucks in a breath and prays for a hole to just open up under his feet and take him away. Rejection is awkward, but he also doesn't want to make an ass of himself. Think Dream, think! he shouts to himself. Tell her you’re spending time with your sister. Say you’re out of town! Say…
“I’m, uh, going with someone already.” What?
“What?”
The girl seems just as shocked as Dream is. Since when is he going to prom? Since when does he have a date?
“Well, then, who are you going with?” the girl prompts, hands on her hips now. Shit. What’s he supposed to say now? It’s clear she isn’t going to back down, and Dream has no way out. It’s too late to back out of the lie, so who is he supposedly going with? His mind begins to run again, scrambling to come up with a viable option or excuse. Almost instantly, a name pops into his head, the worst possible choice, really, but before he can stop himself, he runs with it, blurting out:
“Uh… George?”
