Summary
During the first 6 months of knowing Neil Josten, he’d refused all conversation surrounding shift forms. It was the Foxes’ largest and most anticipated betting pool yet, and one of many more to come surrounding the newest Fox.
It’s not uncommon for people to be private about their shift form, Andrew himself rarely showed it outside of fights. There were also others like Matt or Aaron who preferred it when possible. Neil had taken his privacy to the next level. He was obsessive in his refusal to share even the smallest amount of information with the foxes about his shift-form.
Andrew knew Nicky had bet that it was something really embarrassing, while Renee thought his reluctance to share could’ve been evidence for an inconvenient form, like a dolphin.
He knew it was something else, not embarrassing or aquatic, but that Neil’s form was real. Real where Neil Josten wasn’t more than a broken person’s dream. Andrew hadn’t bothered to bet, had never even asked despite their game.
It had taken Andrew being broken apart and hastily shoved back together, and a palm dragged over hidden scars for him to broach the topic.

Summary
Stay on the path. Do not stray. And above all else, never give your name.
Something is wrong with this forest. No one dares to tread through it except Neil, for whispers say the forest harbors ancient dangers, things that hunger for things beyond flesh. Something is always watching, waiting for a chance to claim more than any mortal can give.
One night, the quiet unease of the woods is shattered by a strange encounter with a creature disguised as a young man. At first glance, the meeting seems harmless, but Neil soon realizes this being is not of this world—it’s playful, dangerous, and far too curious about him. As they exchange sharp words, Neil resists the pull of its tempting promises and narrowly avoids giving away the one thing it desires most: his name. But the creature's parting smile suggests that escaping it once does not mean escaping it forever.
This forest is far from finished with Neil. Something ancient waits in the shadows, patient and cunning. The next time Neil treads its path, the rules may change... and the cost of crossing might be more than just a name.

Summary
The day after Neil disappeared in the middle of the night, Kevin called.
Andrew stared at his phone as it rang. He was in the process of opening a can of cat food, which was a two-handed activity. He set down the can opener and picked up the phone.
“What,” he said.
“You were fucking Nathaniel Wesninski?”
Andrew knew Neil’s real name, and he knew where he had come from. He’d known since the beginning. Neil was a good liar, but he was an obvious liar. Andrew didn't mention any of that to Kevin. Instead, he said, “Who?”or: andrew quits smoking, and he goes to the olympics. eventually, neil comes back.

Summary
“And when he’s gone?” Andrew asked.
Then I’m gone too, Neil thought, but didn’t say. There likely wouldn’t be any reason for Neil to run, but he was going to, anyway. Everyone looking for him would be dead or in jail by the time the FBI was done, but Neil had never been taught to stay in one place. He wasn’t sure if he even knew how. All Neil knew how to do was disappear.
“I’ll be alone, I guess,” Neil said with a shrug.
“Lucky you,” Andrew said. He flicked his cigarette butt off the roof and onto the sidewalk below them.
“Yeah,” Neil said. He stubbed his cigarette out on the sole of his shoe and tossed it over the side of the building after Andrew’s. “Lucky me.”or: neil is an insomniac. andrew is going to beijing. they aren't supposed to meet, but they do anyway.
