“I hate all of it,” Max yells, red faced and crying in anger. “I hate being dragged from Institute to Institute behind mom and dad. Being forgotten until they decide to use me as a pawn in their arguments. I hate never being able to see you and Jace and Izzy; and now Jace is dead and Izzy’s gone and you’re leaving as well. I want to make friends I won’t have to leave behind in a month. I want to be able to read comics and learn things that aren’t fighting and politics. I don’t want to be a Shadowhunter. I wish I’d been born mundane.”
(In a world where Jace never comes back from the World Inverted, Izzy gets exiled. Alec gets himself deruned and Max throws himself along for the ride. A story of Alec stealing back the steering wheel of his life.)
