Ivan does not know true emotion. He is thus branded a defect; something to be chastised and vilified as one would a witch at the stake – hurled at with rotted tomatoes and set to violent flames for the contemptuousness of his mere existence.
It does not feel natural, to be expressive, to show what he should be feeling. He can try, however. If he dons a meticulously-curated smile and utter sweet little nothings, if he pulls the strings to make himself look like a grand saviour; then and only then will people finally tolerate him.
