It’s early December, it’s three in the morning, and honestly Katherine isn’t in the mood OR awake enough to be dealing with this. But here she is taking the half hour drive into Town to pick up Abaddon who decided to cause as much trouble as his little heart desired that night only to be caught by none other than Joel.
Alternative summary: After a serious accident the local authorities begin to question why Katherine has an Undocumented boy in her care, a conspiracy is at play and although the Freelings have contagious optimism Katherine is beginning to worry about whether or not they’ll get Abaddon back.

After a moment, Nathan spoke. “Maybe?”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“…No.” He collapsed into the desk chair, the old wheels squeaking and sliding underneath him. “I haven’t had him for that long, and he’s been having a hard time adjusting. I dont know, I’m just making up excuses.” He shook his head. “Are you mad?”
She hummed, thinking for a moment. “How old is he?” Which wasn’t an answer, but.
Nathan winced. “Uh, nine.”
“Thats a long time to keep a kid a secret.”
OR; Nathan tells a lie he is starting to get much too comfortable telling, and it leads him to taking Abaddon to Thanksgiving dinner

Summary
As the years pass, and Ben and Esther age, the ghosts of the hotel gradually rot, and distort into horrifying, mindless, sinister creatures. After losing her beloved brother, Nathan, to THE ROTTING, Katherine loses her mind, and becomes extremely violent and abusive toward her children.
Ben endures torture to protect his little sister from their mother's violent wrath. He may very well die, trying to protect his vulnerable sister, and become one of the rotting.
