He didn’t have lung cancer. Not yet. Probably. Sure, sometimes he got twinges of pain in his ribs and felt out of breath just from standing up, but that didn’t mean anything. The symptoms were just that: symptoms. He wasn’t sick. Maybe he did have lung cancer. Either way, it didn’t matter.
All that mattered was that he finished signing these papers. It was his responsibility as president. He had to finish it. Everyone was counting on him.

Summary
Blinding panic washed over him as he felt the ropes. He thrashed wildly, trying to escape. He felt a jolt as the dripping net was hauled up, crashing against the ship's side. The mer frantically tried to disentangle himself from the thick ropes of the net, but the more he struggled, the tighter the ropes seemed to become.
No! No, no, no, no, no! The gills on the side of his neck were flaring, and his breathing was ragged. He gave a panicked gasp as the net was dragged over the ship's railing.
With a loud, wet thump, the net with the mer inside was dropped onto the ship's deck.
