The Gods of Magic knew something was wrong with Death.
After the Peverells broke its heart, it no longer saw fit to care for the souls it reaped or the wraiths it banished. All of the others knew that it was almost too late to save Death - the second a god loses interest in its branch of magic is the second it ceases to exist.
