Summary
Evan Buckley buried the love of his life years ago. Eddie Diaz’s death was the wound Buck never recovered from—the folded flag, the funeral, the medals pressed into his hands were all he had left.
Except Eddie isn’t dead.
When Eddie walks into the 118 as their newest firefighter, Buck’s world comes crashing down all over again. Grief collides with longing, fury with love, and suddenly Buck is forced to face the man he mourned, the man who promised he’d come back, and the man who let him believe he never would.
Working side by side should be impossible. Pretending they’re just coworkers is unbearable. And when secrets, old promises, and new dangers come to light, Buck has to decide whether the man he buried is the same one he’s found—or if some ghosts can never be forgiven.

Summary
The killer robot swung its arms in all directions.
Panic ran through his veins as he avoided the scalpels being thrown at him.
In the background, Buck heard Chimney talk into his radio, “Harry, pick up the mic!” then the faint shuffling on the other end, “We need an axe and a sledgehammer!”
Buck, still being trapped on the other side of the room, thought, ‘What if I gave up? What if this will make it easier for everyone else?’ Then, he stopped. He stopped avoiding the scalpels. He just stood there, breathing slowly.
Or: Buck decided to give up in the Ross scene in 9x02.

Summary
Chimney blinks. “Eddie,” he says. “Who’s Eddie?”
At that Maddie barks out a laugh and claps a hand over her mouth, which is adorable. “That’s funny,” she says, but then her eyes settle on Chimney’s puzzled face. Her eyebrows shoot up. “Wait, you don’t- you really don’t know?”
“Uh. No.”
“What do you- oh my god, he usually can’t shut up about him. I guess it really is worse than I thought this time.”
“This ti- Maddie, please, take some pity on me. What is going on? Who is Eddie?”
Maddie’s face does something complicated then. There’s a flash of sadness, then she smiles, but it seems a little defeated. She scratches her chin and reaches for her wine, before she says, “my brother in law.”or: Chimney and Hen have the new guy figured out. Or so they thought.

Summary
“My mom said, uh, that his name was Buck. That he was going to go to the fire academy and that he had a—” she broke off, rubbing her own forehead, exactly where his skin went pink. “She said he went by Firehose.”
Buck didn’t need all of his coworkers to look at him in alarm; he was pretty sure he’d gone deadly pale. His daughter knew four things about him, and one of them was his old tinder profile handle. He felt a little like he was going to die.
“She’s got your eyes,” Eddie commented, unhelpfully.
----
Buck finds out he has a daughter, and also a stupidly big crush on his best friend. It's an adjustment.
