    He reaches out, intending to ruffle Eddie’s curls. He always does that. It makes Eddie laugh every time. He’s sure it will break the tension as easily as it always does.

    But Eddie smacks his approaching hand away so hard it leaves his skin smarting. He’s glaring at Steve with such…such vitriol, it’s palpable.

    It’s a little less funny after that.

    “Eddie, what are you talking about? You’re gay, I’m bi. We’ve kinda been over this,” he says softly, trying for levity, but it comes out weak.

    Unsure, now. After a year together, he doesn’t know what’s going on in Eddie’s head.

    Eddie's looking at him like he doesn't know who Steve is to him.

    And that’s terrifying.

    Eddie stops him again, this time by holding his face. Steve feels Eddie’s thumb moving over his cheek, he feels the cool metal of his rings. He feels everything except what he needs.

    ‘I’ve never loved anything the way I love you, Steve Harrington,’ Eddie says, dark brown eyes moving between Steve’s own. ‘This isn’t the moment, sweetheart.’

    It’s not a rejection, but it’s not a kiss. Steve quietly cries, insides cut up on the broken shards of his stupid little heart and Eddie holds him, he holds him all night until they fall asleep together.
