Waking up in weird places wasn’t unusual for them, too many potions of whatever poison they most enjoyed swallowing at the time, but this one was different he couldn’t have walked this far alone. It was a pretty view, far more beautiful than anything he was accustomed to. Before him lay a small lake, its surface shimmering softly in the light, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant flowers that bloomed in a riot of colors: as if time itself had slowed down.

“We’re both dying aren’t we.” Aimsey says.
“I’m not sure, I have been trying not to think about it, I can't lie” He responds. He knows he doesn’t have much time left but maybe if he forgets the death that is creeping through his body he can wake up and keep pretending tomorrow.

Aimsey didn’t sleep much the night before. Nothing dramatic just the usual hum of thoughts, the kind that stretch too long and don’t lead anywhere.
The air in the apartment was too warm, and the fridge had been making that dying-whale sound again.
When the morning finally dragged itself in through the windows, too pale to be proud of itself, Aimsey was already half-dressed and staring blankly at a spoon in their cereal bowl, wondering if breakfast counted if you didn’t taste any of it.
“Drive me?” Pangi’s voice cut through the quiet like it always like he owned the world and had only paused in speaking because he pitied it. He was standing in the hallway, shoes untied, hoodie inside-out, eyes bloodshot from whatever he’d stayed up doing.

Aimsey lurches forward as their gut does the same, lighting Ponk’s lemon tree on fire. Boomer gives them a grin, striking his own flint and steel, watching as the brown bark quickly catches on fire- bright, orange reflecting in their eyes.
Was she still there?
Back in the lava-lit quartz pocket of hers in the side of the hill?
Would they still be visiting the town-hall, talking to the air, waving their goodbyes to figments of the past?
Or would they have gone home- one of the myriads of portals they’d made, finally lighting up with a glow not unlike the raging fire that burned before Aimsey’s eyes right now?
“Was this a mistake? Should we have done this?”
They weren’t too sure if their question was aimed at Boomer or themself.

It was odd, really, that Aimsey kept coming back.
Hera didn’t expect this when they first started their experiments — maybe faun would come back to her after the drowning, believing it was a mistake… but Hera had killed him too many times to call it a coincidence anymore. Still, Aimsey seemed to act as if she truly believed all of Hera’s half-assed excuses.
Hera wondered, sometimes, if Aimsey wasn’t pretending to believe her, but it didn’t really matter, in the end. The result was still the same.
(The lamb nodded its head in understanding as it was led to the slaughter, believing this to be a sort of penance).

“Hello?” they called, brows knitted together in confusion, but there was no one else in the secret base with them. No one other than Aimsey, who tilted his head and peered curiously over at Guqqie and asked, “What’s up?”
Guqqie shook their head. “Nothing. Thought I heard something, but it must just be, ah, the wind, or something,” she plastered a smile on her face and Aimsey returned it.
“Alright,” Aimsey replied, easily, and continued to mine out a spot for the axolotl pond.
“You’re not, though, right?” Guqqie asked, and Aimsey paused, turning back around with an inquisitive hum.
“I’m not what?”
“Leaving.”

Another needle snaps, and Guqqie realizes that Aimsey might let her pull them right back down to hell. Aimsey, if Guqqie’s waxen wings folded and tore away, would fall past land with her. And tug at her, in a futile effort to bring her back. It scares Guqqie so, so much, like a stumble backwards off a cliff, like a tower spire rising into the thin air, like a crooning whisper in her ear as she wakes. Because she isn't Icarus.
Guqqie is the sun. And she will love Aimsey, and it will kill them.
