Ryu Rumi took in her first breath just as Ryu Mi-yeong breathed out her last.
Rumi has known this fact since Celine had thought Rumi old enough to truly understand its significance. Rumi is also old enough to see the hidden meaning behind those words, of the simple truth that Celine has never spoken aloud.
Rumi understands that she is the reason her mother is dead. That if Rumi had never been born then Rumi's mother would still be alive and Celine would be happy instead of sad.
There are a lot of truths that Rumi will come to learn as she grows older, but that is one of the very first.

Beatrice gathers her pajamas up and heads into the bathroom, but she hesitates just inside the doorframe. After a silent consideration, she turns to look Ava dead in the eye, something unreadable in her gaze.
Worried, Ava says, “Yes?”
For a moment, Beatrice doesn’t say anything, just watches Ava with eyes that seem almost sunken into her skull. Then she straightens up, swallows, and delivers her message.
“Don’t go anywhere.”
