Jason goes out of his way to find the original shop he’d bought this very gift from all those years ago—goes out of his way to track down the exact same mug, down to the make and model and shade of color. And when it finally arrives in the mail, he draws it carefully out of its box and sets it down and lets himself look at it, side by side with the one that holds all the shadows of his past.
Jason exhales.
He digs out a marker. Scratches out “greatest” and writes down, haltingly, “battiest.” His hand trembles. And in front of “dad,” he etches out, not a tacked-on afterthought but careful and deliberate—
GRAND.
World’s Battiest Granddad.
The mugs, he thinks, make a perfect set.
Or: Jason’s a dad now. This puts some things in perspective for him.
Or, or: Roy asks Jason to marry him. Jason ponders the meaning of a name, loves and is loved, and finds himself making two homecomings in one go.
