Summary
There aren't a lot of places Buck can sit comfortably with his thoughts, but here—out on the water, body weightless as long as he lies still, no sound but the lap of the waves and the breath thrumming in his chest—here there's nothing in the world to drag him down, no anger no worry and, most of all, no regrets to fill his lungs and suffocate him. Here on the water it's fine that he's alone.
He wonders if Maddie felt alone when she died.
or;
Five years after his sister is legally declared dead, Buck finds his way to Los Angeles and joins the 118, hoping he can make Maddie's memory proud.
And the universe smiles down on him.

Summary
Eventually, Buck breaks the silence. “Hey, Eddie,” he says, Eddie’s name soft as a prayer on his tongue.
“Yeah, Buck?” Eddie whispers back.
Silently, Buck reaches over, grabs Eddie’s pink cowboy hat right off his head, and places it on his head.
Eddie’s blood freezes in his veins.
He grew up in Texas, so of course he knows that taking a cowboy’s hat and putting it on means you want to go home with them.Bookmarked by KazzaRuby

Summary
Eddie—gulps, looking at him, because Buck doesn’t—he doesn’t look bothered, but he doesn’t look like he’s going to get up and finish the job, either. They’re at a standstill. The air in the room feels less like pops of static and more like a heavy cover of humidity. Their eyes won’t meet.
“Uh,” Eddie manages, pointing to the door. Buck’s eyes are still somewhere past Eddie. “We should get back out there, huh?”
“Yeah,” Buck says.
…or, Buck and Eddie almost kiss. Things go about as well as you would expect them to go.
