Summary

No matter how hard Harry tried to prevent it from getting to this, it was only natural that any interaction with Malfoy ended in an argument. Harry didn’t even want to imagine how painful having to spend an entire hour in detention with the other was going to be
—Harry and Draco end up alone in detention together after being caught out after curfew. Hermione suggested that Harry should catch up on some review for their midterms, especially Potions. She also suggests that he could ask Draco for help while they're just sitting there. Harry and Ron think that's the stupidest idea she's ever had. Nevertheless, Harry shoots his shot, and it actually isn't so bad. He seems... different. He's still Draco, but the cruel vindictiveness that used to shine show brightly in him has dulled. Being replaced with something softer, and nicer. Then Harry finds Draco again, asks him for more help which he surprisingly agrees to. A couple days later he invites him to Hogsmeade? And a Slytherin party?

Children’s hair sometimes changes color as you grow. When he’s young enough for it not to be unusual, but old enough to know he’ll get in trouble for doing something ‘freakish’ again, Harry's hair goes from his father's dark locks to his mother's bright, most-likely-magical red hair.
It changes everything about who he identifies with, who he wants to grow up to be, and who he thinks he is. Instead of having James Potter as his idol, Lily turns out to be a much better influence.
So instead of seeing a scruffy, most-likely-muggleborn boy standing beside him in Madam Malkin's before their first year, Draco only has eyes for the scarlet-haired, green-eyed creature who just walked into his life.
