He seemed to feel her staring. He rolled over and regarded her, heavy-lidded. The eyes beneath the long lashes were glittering dark and knowing, the eyes of a grown man in the face of a beardless youth fair as a girl. It was the face of a young god or a dream-vision. Were they all like this, the Elves of this west country? Ye gods! This ill-spoken prince hadn’t even been the prettiest one at the party.

    Summary

Eons ago, when the gods were creating the first Chandrilans, it is said that they made them with four arms, four legs, and two heads. Dissatisfied, they split them down the middle, helplessly leaving each human to search for the rest of themselves. Chandrilan elders teach that each person is longing for their other half torn away from them at creation, for someone to complete the missing parts of them.

In the practical, highbrow culture of elite Chandrila, this romanticism has fallen by the wayside in favor of familial alliances and marriage contracts. There is no need for talk of such things when one can be woven into the braid of sacred tradition.

Still, sometimes Mon looks at her husband, and she wonders.
