They could bring a whole parade of daring, brave, and wonderful girls. Nicolas could admire them. He could befriend them. He could even marry them, but it would never break the curse. It wouldn’t work. He couldn’t love any of them the way the magic required. He could fall in love, he thought he had it in him somewhere, but not with a girl. He would never be able to break the curse, because he only had those sorts of feelings, the heart thudding, dizzying ones, about men. There was no use pretending, no use holding out hope. It was hard enough to imagine even the most adventuring of women falling in love with a prince-turned-beast. It was impossible to imagine a man doing so.

It was a statement more than a question, as if Vanitas had to repeat it to believe it.
“I do!” Noé nodded, that damn dimple appearing on his left cheek. Curse that wretched thing. “I’ve never heard anything like it.”
