His voice pitches, snaps like a mainmast, harsh and dripping with anger and something deeper, colder. “You think— what, you’ll get on your knees for me and it’ll absolve you of this? Henry stood up. “Forget the tea,” he said with the same steel in his voice that Graham always had when he forced Henry to do his exercises, “We’re going to the parlour.”

They left the social early that night, right around the time Collins ordered a fifth round for the team. Graham wasn’t nearly that drunk—he was barely buzzed, actually, and Dundy had been sober the entire night. Painkillers for his leg; he'd watched the entire match that day from the sidelines.
Graham was hoping to make up for it now.

Perhaps, Francis will think later, it would have been kinder to say no— to steer him to the door of his cabin, see him safely into bed, then return to Terror to bring in the first minutes of 1842 alone with a glass of whiskey and the blank pages of his captain’s log the way he’d intended to before James had ever put on that damn dress and pulled him onto their cobbled-together dancefloor out on the ice— but James turns his face into Francis’ throat, and his nose is cold as ice against the pulse point there, and Francis wonders if there’s ever been a person on Earth capable of saying no to James Clark Ross.
