Summary
In this aged-up AU, Charlie never told Nick that he'd been in love with him for a decade, until it blew up in their faces during a fight. After thirteen months of not speaking, Tori calls Nick to tell him Charlie needs him, and Nick drops everything to care for an injured Charlie.
Charlie broke his ankle and can't put any weight on it for five more weeks, which means needing help. Something he would rather die than ask for. Then, as if he's dreaming, Nick shows up when he's falling apart and vows to take care of him. It doesn't matter that they haven't spoken in over a year, all that matters is that Nick is there and holding him close.
But the feelings that nearly destroyed them are boiling under the surface. They need to figure out how to navigate the new them--even if that means reopening healed wounds. (This has a very happy ending don't worry!)

This is a canon-divergent story that starts after the fight in the novella Nick and Charlie. At the start of this story, after a summer during which the breakup does not get resolved, a heartbroken Charlie sleeps with David to feel close to Nick.
I originally tagged this work as a dead dove because the David / Charlie tag did not exist at that point. Now that it does, people can filter this pairing out if they would prefer not to see it.
If you would like to read the story but would prefer to skip the part where David and Charlie sleep together you can head straight to chapter 2.

Summary
Nick (33) and Charlie (31) are both therapists working at a community mental health center in Nashville, Tennessee. Nick works with children as a play therapist, and Charlie works with teens. Being in different departments means they haven't really noticed one another. That is, until they are assigned seats together at a boring clinical training and disruptive laughter ensues.
Nick is frustrated with dating as a demi bi guy, and Charlie is new to dating while sober, without the usual party scene. Nick helps Charlie discover parts of himself he wasn't even aware existed. Charlie tests Nick's perfectionism with his messy joy.
