Summary
"Evan?" Tommy answers almost immediately, and there's a subtle undercurrent of worry in his tone. Buck winces. Right, calling out of the blue while he's at work would look. Bad.
"I'm okay!" He says quickly, all in one breath. Then pauses. The kitten squints up at him, meowing again, long and loud. Its whole fluffy face scrunches with the effort.
"...What was that?"
"Uh. That would be why I called, actually."

Summary
“Thanks,” Tommy says softly, taking the records. “Sorry.”
“You keep saying that, but I don't know why,” Buck says, aiming for teasing and just sounding as concerned as he feels.
Tommy's lips press together, and he blinks right before his eyes get shiny. “My father died last week.”
Buck remembers the shocked, numb feeling that followed him for days after Bobby died. Weeks, really. But he knows Tommy had a complicated relationship with his dad, even though he rarely talked about it. Just like they rarely talked about anything.
“I'm sorry,” he says, even though it feels insufficient. “Did you eat today?”
--
Buck runs into Tommy and helps him navigate the complications of grief and final arrangements.

Summary
Maybe when he's sober, he can figure out why he does it. But right now? He's got no idea why he pulls his phone from his pocket, blinks over and over to clear his vision, selects a text thread he should have deleted a long time ago, then presses the little phone icon in the corner before passing it to the bartender. "Here ya go. Tommy. Call him."
He has know idea how long it takes, but he's resting his head on his arms atop the bar when the bartender's voice pierces through the headache already forming, but it's clearly directed at someone else.
"Hey, you here for him?"
"Yeah," a familiar voice rings out and Buck blearily lifts his head. "I've got him."
Or: Buck doesn't know how to deal. Tommy tries to help.

Summary
Buck’s voice is a mere whisper when says, “Bobby’s death. It was my fault.”
“What–” Tommy seems to struggle with finding the right words. It takes him a few seconds but then he finally settles for saying, “Evan, what happened to Bobby was a tragedy. It wasn’t your fault.”
“Yes, it was. I changed the past when I saved you after the helicopter crash. I couldn’t live in the world without you so somehow I went back and saved you. You lived so someone had to die for nature to find balance. A life for a life.” Buck chokes out, barely seeing Tommy’s shocked and confused face through the tears that have welled up in his eyes. “It’s my fault that Bobby’s gone. I did this, Tommy. I killed him– I killed him, I killed him!”
(or: after Tommy dies in a helicopter crash, Buck somehow finds himself reliving the day and decides to fix it, not realising that an opportunity like that comes with a price.)
