She went down into the subway at the end of her block. She got on the train headed toward Elmhurst from her parent's place in Astoria. She scrolled Instagram, one earbud in, with a bag of chicken soup and a few slices of chocolate babka from the bakery down the block.
And then the train stopped hard. Screeching brakes, the two other people on the train car with her shouting and then nothing. She woke up on a beach one very cold February morning.
