At some stage in life, opposing a parent becomes a necessary rite of passage in forming a distinct sense of self. A child, having inherited traits from their parent, is often perceived as an extension or replica—making it difficult for the parent to fully recognize them as independent. For the child, the parent—so similar, yet so much more powerful—can feel like both a source of fear and an inevitable wall to confront. In breaking from dependence and challenging that authority, the child must come to terms not only with the parent but also with the version of themselves shaped under that influence.

They left the café behind slowly, no rush in their steps. Just the soft shuffle of shoes on pavement, the occasional brush of shoulders. Seulgi kept glancing over like she was working up to something: eyes flicking forward, then sideways, then forward again.
Jaeyi said nothing. She’d learned to recognize the signs. Seulgi didn’t like to be nudged when she was halfway to brave. And right now, she was clearly trying. So Jaeyi stayed quiet, just close enough, giving space without stepping away.
And then, there it was.
Just as they passed under the soft spill of a streetlamp, Seulgi’s hand brushed hers. Light. Tentative. Once, then twice. A little nudge of her pinky that lingered, like it was waiting for permission. Or courage.
Then, finally, fingers threaded through hers. Gentle, but purposeful.
Jaeyi’s heart didrt a strange, full flutter in her chest. She didn’t look over, didn’t dare jinx it. Just smiled to herself, biting the inside of her cheek because, god, she was proud of her.
It wasn’t about the handholding. Not really. It was that Seulgi had reached first. Shy, careful Seulgi, who built courage like a blueprint, had decided, on her own, to close the space between them.
Jaeyi tightened her grip in response. Not too much. Just enough to say: I see you. I noticed. And then, because her joy was bubbling right behind her ribs, she gave their joined hands a swing. Just once. Playful. A little dorky. Like she couldn't hold still under the warmth crawling across her skin.
Seulgi didn’t let go.

She caught sight of her red thread.
Her breath caught. For the first time in her life, it wasn’t pulling. It curved softly now, floating like a ribbon in still water. Relaxed.
She rose without thinking.
Her shoes clicked softly against the wooden aisle as she moved, eyes fixed on the invisible line that dipped and curled between rows of students. It went past the old woman, so she stopped to buy her flowers, if only to get her to move out of her way. And then finally, as the human obstacle was removed, she saw it.
At the back of the auditorium, a moon-eyed girl in a maroon uniform stood uncertainly in the doorway, looking around. Her hair was pulled back in a messy half ponytail. She looked lost and overwhelmed.
On her left hand, a silver ring.
Jaeyi’s silver ring.
Their threads met at the point where silver kissed skin.
