The world is ending.
Ever since that boat came through, trailing the sickness behind it like an octopus releasing ink. The iridescent slime that looked so pretty when it first arrived. The three of them gazed at it in wonder on the water’s surface, hypnotized by the way its colors shifted faster than a cuttlefish and its silvery metallic appearance. Just like one of the human boats.
Wil swam through it on a dare. They all laughed as he darted in headfirst.
That was until he emerged on the other side, heaving and clawing at his gills in pain.
And that was only the beginning.
It spread its tendrils further into the water and their home turned into hell.

Tommy has feared mers all his life - elusive creatures of the ocean, the only remaining form of magic in the world, only surviving because they were so far from the touch of man. But they were more than elusive - they were evil, merciless, human-killing machines that killed his mother and his brother when he was six.
At least, that's what he thought. Until he comes face-to-face with magic and, for the first time in his life, begins to question the world his father has built for him.

"I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your brothers probably drowned," Puffy, his foster mom, explained. She then went on to explain what would happen, to offer him mental health resources and ask him what arrangements he wanted to be made for their funerals and belongings.
But Tommy tuned her out, because that didn't make sense. The lake wasn't that deep, and both Wilbur and Techno were confident swimmers. Hell, they'd both been lifeguards for at least a summer. Either one of them could swim the other to shore with ease, even if one of them did pass out. They both knew CPR. It didn't add up.
Tommy suspected it was a murder, but everyone else was determined to brush it off. It pissed him off.
Or: eight months ago, Tommy's brothers vanished. He finally has the chance to investigate what happened himself, and he's not giving this chance up.
