His gaze lingered on Rey, admiring the gentle sway of her hips and her elegant nape. The ocean breeze ruffled the hem of her dress and shawl, and her brown curls yearned to escape the confines of her bonnet. He pictured her asleep in her bed, dressed in a nightgown of lace and silk – her hair unbound, falling like a waterfall across her pillow as her chest rose and fell with each breath.
Then he pictured her pale neck, exposed and smooth to the touch.
He would visit her tonight.

Summary
Rey stood on the edge of the tree line, moonlit fields of barley and oats behind her, a safe sea of lapping waves that rustled with the evening breeze. Darkness and uncertainty loomed before her, the trees dense and overgrown after years of neglect. Farmers used to bring their hogs into the wood to forage. That was before the gods had woken to reclaim their wood when she was a babe.
If someone were to witness her standing here, the punishment would be insurmountable, but Rey had no choice. Her entire being cried out for her soulmate and with everyone so neatly paired together, her pain was tenfold. Was she supposed to sit on her thumbs while her friends lived happy, complete lives? Rey couldn’t accept that. The risk was worth making a plea to the gods.
Men could no longer help her. She silently hoped the gods would listen.
With a steadying breath, she strode forward.

Stone cracked beside her, as his fist made contact with the wall. Rey flinched in shock.
“You will not tell anyone. Or I’ll kill you,” he said quietly, his voice promising murder.
Immobilised by fear, she stared transfixed up at his eyes. Dark and hypnotic, with that same glint of silver—the eyes of a predator.
And she was prey.

Or: Stuck in a sticky spot of life or death, healer and local wise-woman Rey finds herself proposing a crazy deal with her rival and annoying new doctor to her village, who also happens to have a little *secret*.
He gets more blood, she gets to stay alive, plus a guarantee that he'll eventually leave. It's a win-win!

Most people won’t get the future they think they want. Some people don’t have pleasant futures. Some have rotten futures. And some don’t have futures at all.
He’s never seen any future like Rey’s, because he’s never been able to see his own — until now.
